How Split Bills and Receipts Work at the Table

Large tables, shared plates and “I’ll pay for these two” are part of every service. Working out the shares on a calculator at the table is slow, and odd cents and the cover charge are easy to argue over. This guide shows how split bills and receipts work in Kappino, as part of the same payment flow as the rest of the Kappino POS.

Which bills can be split?

Dine-in, counter and takeaway bills can all be split. That covers a large table where everyone pays for their own dishes, friends paying separately at a bar counter, and a takeaway order placed by several people together.

Step 1: open the bill

Open the bill from the table on the floor plan, or from a counter or takeaway order on the POS.

Step 2: choose how to split

Kappino gives you four ways to divide a bill:

  • Split equally: divide the total between up to 50 people, with odd cents spread fairly.
  • Share out the items: each guest pays for what they ordered.
  • Allocate by hand: drag or tap items to accounts, including part of a quantity, for example one of three bottles of water.
  • Merge accounts: name the accounts and combine two when people decide to pay together.

Step 3: decide how the cover charge is shared

The cover charge can be split evenly between the accounts, shared in proportion to what each person spent, or left on the table bill. The choice is made per bill, so the team does not have to work it out by hand.

Step 4: collect each account

Each account is paid separately. Record how it was paid: card, cash, QR, wallet or meal voucher, with the amount received and the change. Card payments are taken on your own card terminal; Kappino records the payment rather than processing it.

If a payment is recorded on the wrong account, reverse it with a reason and record it again. The reason stays on record.

Step 5: give every guest a receipt

Kappino prints 80 mm thermal receipts with a VAT summary, the amount received and the change. You can print a pre-bill for each account or for the whole table before anyone pays, and email a receipt to a guest straight from the Collect Payment screen.

Step 6: free the table

On the floor plan, each table shows how many of its split accounts are already paid, so the team can see at a glance which tables are almost settled. When every account is paid, free the table for the next guests.

What else happens at checkout

  • The payment updates the live dashboard and sales reports straight away.
  • Loyalty points are added to the guest’s account at checkout, for restaurants that use the loyalty programme.
  • Receipts print on standard 80 mm printers, including the Kappino 80 mm thermal printer.
